Holmes STEM Academy, the middle school, partnered with its neighbor Brownell Elementary to host a Halloween block party -- in the hallway -- with a costume walk-through, karaoke, board games and face painting Monday afternoon.

Students were encouraged to show off their costumes and meet older students in the middle school building. Each elementary school student received a gift bag with candy, a coloring book and a pack of crayons inside.

Holmes STEM Academy Assistant Principal Donnetta Moore, who helped organize the event, said teachers and administrators wanted to help take some responsibility off of parents who might be reconsidering trick or treating in their neighborhoods if it keeps raining into Monday night.

“Me and my staff decided that we wanted to do something different and fun with the students,” Moore said. “... We came together and provided candy for the students.”

It’s important that students can have fun while learning and interacting with others, Moore said.

“It was overwhelming -- seeing the smiles on their faces,” Moore said.

Alongside seeing the hallways of the middle school, elementary school students also got to meet members of the middle school football team fresh off of a championship run.

Jaquan Watson, an eighth grade student who plays quarterback, donned the trophy with the rest of his team for photos.

The Flint Jaguars, accompanied by the Jaguar mascot who attended the Halloween festivities, won the Dynasty Sports League Championship Trophy.
