Incident happened on November 26th in Spartanburg County.

A man has been charged after admitting to suffocating his wife with a plastic bag, and attempting to take his own life, according to Lt. Kevin Bobo with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

According to warrants, Carl Frederick Berry, Jr., 67, is charged with murder.

Bobo said on Nov. 26, Spartanburg County deputies and officials with the North Spartanburg Fire Department responded to a home on Ranier Drive in Inman, in regards to a possible overdose. Upon arrival, they found a woman dead and Berry, Jr. unresponsive.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the woman as Patricia Lucas Berry, 65.

Bobo said an examination of the evidence at the scene suggested the woman's death was not a natural one, and that the incident appeared to be a murder and attempted suicide.

According to Bobo, once Berry Jr. was stable at a hospital, he confessed that he suffocated his wife by placing a plastic bag over her head and then attempted to take his own life by overdosing.

Berry Jr. was discharged from a hospital on Tuesday and arrested for his wife's murder.

Bobo said Berry Jr. appeared before a magistrate Wednesday for arraignment. His bond was denied.

According to an incident report, the son of the victim and suspect said that he saw the couple earlier that morning and thought that his mother was asleep and that his father drank too much and was passed out.

The report said when the son arrived back at the home later in the day he realized his mother was dead and his father was still passed out and called 911.

According to the report, an investigator on the scene found a letter on a table that appeared to be written by Berry, Jr., that indicated that he intentionally caused the death of his wife.

The motive for this incident is still under investigation.
